Welcome to my French pharmacy favourites,
As a fan of a good list (!), and as a former beauty PR, now living in rural southwest France, I thought I'd share a collection of the French pharmacy products I use, love and happily recommend.
French pharmacies have a certain mythology (I’ve written about that and the rave-culture signage, here, in Storms, pharmacy-raves & wildlife) and over the years I've discovered some of my absolute favourite skincare heroes in amongst pharmacy shelves. I’m particularly fond of inexpensive but effective skincare.
Like everything else at our 1730s French farmhouse, this will most likely be a living resource. I'll add any new discoveries as I find them : )

📆 Everyday Skincare
This is my absolute favourite serum - light, non-sticky and definitely gives skin a glow.
Apply before your usual moisturiser.
Glass bottle with pipette.
As you can see I need to buy more!
La Roche Posay is possibly the most well-known French pharmacy brand - and for good reason. In Summer, I find this light, SPF30, moisturiser glides on, and crucially, doesn’t drip off on hot days!
Great for redness prone skin.
Light, but effective.
This is a recent addition, Aroma-Zone’s products are IMO incredibly good value, so I was interested to try this bestseller. I’ve been using it as a night cream, and lathering it on - it disappears quickly and is great for a long skin drink after a day in Summer heat.
Vegan.
Incredibly good value.
This foaming cleanser is a long-time favourite, removes the day’s grime, residual make-up and leaves your face feeling super fresh.
Functional, effective skincare.
This is the latest addition to my French skincare collection. An established organic skincare brand from Toulouse - I love the metal tin packaging, and the cream is fabulous.
Bio, and with Omegas, 3, 6, 9.
🎂 Age specific essentials, from 20’s to 50’s
Things I’ve used for age specific skincare needs over the years…
50’s: Another inexpensive whizz product from Aroma-Zone, to help smooth fine lines and restore skin elasticity.
I use this every few days, after a shower, before applying night cream.
No longer in my 20’s (!) I don’t have any of these currently, but I used a lot of Laboratories Garnier products, partly, again, initially, due to my L’Orèal connection.
☀ Summer Essentials
A long-time Lancaster and Biotherm suncare fan, I tried Caudalie for the first time this year. Excellent. Similarly, it doesn’t leave your skin feeling greasy and ‘covered in sun protection’ - and, bonus, the range is less expensive.
Less expensive than Lancaster, Biotherm.
I started using Biotherm sincere way back when I worked for L’Orèal - and realise I still have an affinity for their stable of brands : )
Absorbed quickly, non-sticky - and your skin doesn’t feel smothered, just protected!
Brilliant for soothing skin - sunburn, heat rashes, insect bites - this is a household favourite.
Organic / Bio.
I used to use see urea and think, footcare only - but I love this product, especially in the Summer, and if I could bathe in it I would : )
10% Urea, intense skin hydration.
Great for bare legs.
🍂 Autumn Essentials
Possibly quite niche, certainly very countryside, but come harvest-time in this part of France, it’s easy to pick-up aoûtats (harvest-mites) in the long grass. both on clothes and, of course, dog fur. They do not like lavender, so I spray myself with this liberally every day during these months!
🏥 Bathroom cabinet back-up
The first port of call for any bump or bruise - I like this one as it’s not only soothing but not too sticky..
This homeopathic cream is brilliant for insect bites, soothing and non-irritating for the skin - it’s a bathroom cabinet essential here in rural France : )
This is a French bathroom cabinet staple in most households - great for scratches, dry skin, soothing sunburn - a great all-rounder.
I have friends who use this as a moisturiser on particularly dry areas, eg: elbows.
💅 Nails
A really sustainable brand, and an exceptionally decent nail polish that is not only plant-based, so no nastiness, but also breathable - so better for your nails.
For anyone with perpetually dry cuticles, this stuff is fabulous - a tiny drop on your nails every day and be-gone unsightly cuticles!
💤 Sleep
Lavender Oil, but not just any lavender oil - this is proper lavender oil, a million miles away from commercial brands.
A few drops on your pillow helps you fall asleep.
Smells heavenly.
Buy in Provence pharmacies, on site at the farm or order via email.
A gift from a friend, I am now obsessed. Not a pharmacy find, but I’ve popped it in this section as I love it so much and it complements all my other pharmacy faves : )
Lavender, Chamomile & Patchouli.
💇♀ Haircare
A recent convert to Klorane shampoos and conditioners - gentle, and smell delicious.

A note on adverts & affiliates
This newsletter receives a fair number of advertising opportunities, most of which I reject because they simply don’t fit. However, where I’ve liked the brand and thought it may be of interest to others (ie, you lovely people!) I’ve said yes.
Adverts such as these also pay this newsletter for any clicks which in turn helps me pay for the software (and time involved!) in creating this newsletter. So, if you’re even vaguely interested, please do click through on an advert and have a look - there are no requirements to subscribe, shop or register any details - and you may just find something of interest as well as helping Adventures & Ateliers along the way!
Occasionally, I will also have the odd affiliate link. As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases. Again, I’ll only include these if it’s something I already use or was going to mention anyway. Affiliate links simply mean that I may receive commission on any purchases made through it.
